After a 15-day strike in the municipality of Chiclayo, mainly joined by administrative and auxiliary workers, the Regional Labour Department declared the action illegal and the mayor threatened to make mass dismissals, claiming that the strike was creating public health risks and that the workers concerned already had sufficient benefits. The workers were asking to be formally and directly hired as public sector employees, to have the benefit of being covered by the collective agreement along with the other employees in the sector. They were also denouncing the mayor for telling the media that their pay was high enough, while the trade unionists said they had proof to the contrary.
